Hello smART Families community,

Before we kick into high gear for the holiday frenzy, I thought it would be a good time to bring to your attention an artful experience worth squeezing into the busy schedule.

What would you give to be in a room with Picasso and Braque, while they chat about the accepted notions of art, or toss about concepts of perspective? SBMA is offering an opportunity to do just that with Picasso and Braque: The Cubist Experiment, 1910 - 1912 exhibition organized by Chief Curator, Eik Kahng. Works on loan from such prestigious museums as the MET, MOMA and the Tate have been assembled to present a dialogue about ideas. Take a look at how these heavy hitters don't just break, but shatter the rules of painterly representation. Chime in and express your thoughts about how Cubism turned things upside down and sideways.

Picasso and Braque:
The Cubist Experiment, 1910 – 1912

On view through January 8, 2012

Take the family, meet some friends, slide in solo or join an exhibition tour, but do not miss out on this unique glimpse into the master minds of Analytic Cubism.

Yes, Pablo, there is an app for that...

You need not be an Information Technology pro or an art historian to gain some insight as to the extraordinary works on display in the Picasso and Braque exhibition. Developed by UCSB graduate, Reza Ali, the iCubist application provides dazzling visual intensification enabling a greater sense of process and composition. Interactive elements appeal to the kid in all of us. NO fighting, there are plenty of preloaded iPads available at the entrance to the exhibition in the Thayer Gallery.

A different kind of conversation

After you take in the Picasso and Braque show consider this – A great follow up might be a trip to LACMA to view the Monet/Lichtenstein: Rouen Cathedrals exhibition. Claude Monet impressionist paintings of the French cathedral set up next to pop artist Roy Lichtenstein's appropriation of the same. Monet's gorgeous use of color to depict temporal changes is a brilliant foil for Lichtenstein's serialized version. Something to talk about.

Spent a bit of time looking through the summer issue of ARTnews, and came upon an interview with Jasper Johns. This quote made me laugh, and then reflect upon the reverberating effects of knowledge.

"You can find some way to understand almost anything, but you may miss a lot."
