ArtVentures at the Ridley-Tree Education Center at McCormick House
1600 Santa Barbara Streeet, Santa Barbara

Just a short walk from the Museum is its off-site facility dedicated to hands-on art education for children and adults: The Ridley-Tree Education Center at McCormick House.  At the Ridley-Tree Education Center, a variety of art classes and camps provide an atmosphere where creativity, studio art practices, and fun combine to create an enriching experience for people of all ages.

Second Saturdays at SBMA

Kids ages 6 and up are invited to explore a single work of art, a theme, a technique, or a culture featured in the Museum’s collections. Discussion and hands-on projects make this a uniquely creative experience! Parents are welcome to participate. Art Teacher: Monika Molnar-Metzenthin

Design and build your own musical instruments and bring them to life with melodies and rhythms from around the world in jam sessions and fun performances! Art Teacher: Jason Summers

Draw Like Crazy!
Tuesdays, January 20 - March 10, 3:30 - 5 pm (Ages 8-10)

Raise your drawing skills to another level as you doodle, sketch, and draw using an assortment of drawing materials.    Art Teacher: Bill McVicar

Guerilla Art
Tuesdays, January 20 - March 10, 3:30 - 5 pm (Ages 10-12)

Be a true revolutionary artist!  Use your imagination and express yourself in postcards, artists‘ books, “zines“, and other small works of art that can be left for others to find.  Art Teacher: Emma Garr  

Time Traveler
Wednesdays, January 21 - March 11, 3:30 - 5 pm (Ages 6-8)

Travel across time and continents to explore some of the traditional arts of the world using a variety of artistic media.  Learn about foreign cultures all along the journey.  Art Teacher: Emma Garra   

Ceramics:  Build and Throw
Wednesdays, January 21 - March 11, 3:30 - 5 pm (Ages 8-10)

Thursdays, January 22 - March 12, 3:30 - 5 pm (Ages 10-12)

Touch and feel the magic of clay!  This class introduces sculptural and functional ceramics and combines hand-building and wheel throwing in always new and exciting projects.  Art Teacher: Sondra Weiss  

Mini Masters
Thursdays, January 22 - March 12, 3:30 - 5 pm (Ages 7-9)

Explore the work of master artists and then draw, paint, sculpt, print, or collage your own masterpieces influenced by their styles.  Art Teacher: Michelle Elizondo     

Sticks and Stones
Thursdays, January 22 - March 12, 3:30 - 5 pm (Ages 8-10)

Be inspired by Santa Barbara’s natural beauty, including plants, animals, and rocks, and create works of art with found objects in all media.  Art Teacher: Emma Garr      

 

Parent/Child Classes

Parents and children (ages 3-5) learn together as they explore imaginative drawing, painting, sculpting, and mixed media projects that promote manual dexterity and creative thinking.  Music, stories, and creative movement are part of the art experience. Class size limited to 6 parent/child pairs. Art teacher: Bill McVicar

Paint Magic!
Thursdays, January 22 - March 12, 9:30 - 11 am

A paintbrush is our magic wand and rainbows of colors flow from it to create exciting textures, patterns, shapes, and colors!  Fairies and magicians are encouraged to enroll!

Globe Toddlers!
Thursdays, January 22 - March 12, 3:30 - 5 pm

The journey continues to new destinations: explore art traditions from around the world and create masks, games, toys, and more!

 

ArtVenture Camps

At ArtVenture Camps children spend their day immersed in hands-on art making, cultural history, and creative problem solving. Lots of personal attention by professional artists and art educators, and the inspiring atmosphere of the beautiful McCormick House, guarantee an unique art experience.  Children are grouped by age in four studios; art projects are suitable for each age group and are always new and exciting.

Spring

Africa Now!
March 30 - April 3, 9 am - 3 pm

Inspired by the exhibition Yinka Shonibare, MBE: A Flying Machine for Every Man, Woman and Child and Other Astonishing Works we will explore traditional and contemporary African art in a variety of amazing art projects.

 

The Robert and Marlene Veloz Children’s Gallery
The Robert and Marlene Veloz Children's Gallery has re-opened with an exciting new installation - Off the Wall: Art & Stories which re-imagines works of art from the permanent collection as stories you can enter and alter at the push of a button or the turn of a handle.  Open Tuesday - Sunday, 11 am - 5 pm.
