Contemporary Art and Design in Japan's Inland Sea featuring the Setouchi International Art Fair
Fall 2011

Thoroughly modern yet highly traditional, Japan is a country with both cutting-edge design and time-honored conventions. During four days in Kyoto, experience the subtle elusiveness of Japanese gardens, the gracefully sloping roofs of centuries-old wooden temples, and the elegant simplicity of Japan’s modern architecture. On day trips from Kyoto, visit the Miho Museum: I.M. Pei's recent architectural masterpiece and the city of Nara, once the capital of Japan, to see two of Japan's most famous temples: Todaiji and Horyuji. Spend two nights on Naoshima Island and two nights in Takamatsu, exploring the Setouchi International Art Fair, Isamu Noguchi's former studio, and Tadao Ando's Benesse House. Against the backdrop of the island-studded Seto Inland Sea, Setouchi Art brings together renowned contemporary Japanese and international artists and architects. The tour ends with one night in Osaka and an optional extension to Tokyo is offered. Cost tba.
