The Santa Barbara Museum of Art is one of the finest museums on the West coast and is celebrated for the superb quality of its permanent collection. Its mission is to integrate art into the lives of people through internationally recognized exhibitions, special programs, as well as the thoughtful presentation of its permanent collection.
The Museum is currently seeking the ideal candidate for a full-time, Asian Art Research Fellow in support of a range of curatorial activity in preparation for the Museum’s reinstallation of the permanent collection coincident with the reopening of the newly renovated galleries. This position reports to the Elizabeth Atkins Curator of Asian Art. This is an excellent opportunity for advanced graduate students in the history of Asian art who wish to pursue a curatorial career, as it offers firsthand experience in nearly all aspects of the art museum with emphasis on object research, documentation, and exhibition planning.
This position’s primary responsibility will be in support of the reinstallation of the wide-ranging arts of Asia (China, Japan, Korea, India, SE Asia, and Himalayas) from the permanent collection organized by the Elizabeth Atkins Curator of Art. Duties include object research, improving documentation within the Museum’s database including adding information in the original language where possible, helping to create interpretive materials including wall texts, labels, brochure, diagrams, maps, and videos for the gallery, and online presentations. Other duties include working with other departments such as Education and Communications on the conceptualization and implementation of Asian art related events and programs.
MA degree in the history of art and ABD are welcome, and some museum experience will be preferred. Qualified candidates will have an advanced degree in Asian art history with demonstrated research capabilities. Reading fluency in an East Asian language is essential, preferably Chinese or Japanese. Excellent research and organizational skills, a strong ability to multi-task, proficiency with MS Office, and excellent written communication skills are required. Knowledge of TMS software and basic graphic design skills are preferred. Sociability and working well across departments also a must, as is a can-do attitude and strong work ethic.
- Schedule: Full Time - 40 hours/week.
