The Santa Barbara Museum of Art is one of the finest museums on the West Coast and is recognized for the superb quality of its permanent collection. Its mission is to integrate art into the lives of people through internationally recognized exhibitions, special programs, as well as the thoughtful presentation of its permanent collection.
The Assistant Registrar supports the Collections Management Department in managing permanent collection and loan artworks, and assists in documenting and cataloguing permanent collection and loan artworks, including tracking locations, and creating and updating manual Registration records. Assistant Registrar also works on the museum’s TMS art collection database to create and update computerized artwork records, and on permanent collection exhibitions and gallery rotations as assigned. The position helps manage photography sessions of the permanent collection, and supports the department in managing exhibition loans, traveling exhibitions, and long term loans. They also work on projects designated by the Director of Collections Management which may include physical inventory and monitoring storage and environmental conditions. Substantial art handling may be required for completion of some duties. Duties may also include short-duration travel, both local and international.
BA degree is required, preferably in Art History, Studio Art, or Museum Studies, and knowledge of art media and art handling/packing/shipping methods is preferred. Excellent record keeping, computer and clerical skills required; meticulous attention to detail and high level of cognitive decision making for the safe handling of valuable and unique artworks are necessary for the successful performance of duties. Two years of experience in Registration/Collections Management and TMS database experience is highly desirable. Must be able to occasionally lift art objects up to 50 pounds.
