The Santa Barbara Museum of Art is one of the finest museums on the West coast and is celebrated for the superb quality of its permanent collection. The Museum is seeking the ideal candidate for a full-time, Curatorial Exhibitions Assistant in support of our programs related to pre-1945 American and European Art, under the supervision of the Deputy Director/Chief Curator. This is an excellent opportunity for advanced graduate students in the history of art who wish to pursue a curatorial career, as it offers firsthand experience in nearly all aspects of the art museum. Qualified candidates will have an advanced degree in art history with demonstrated research capabilities (MA; ABD preferred). Reading fluency in French required.
This position’s primary responsibility will be in support of major exhibitions organized by the Deputy Director/Chief Curator in the area of pre-1945 Western art. Upcoming exhibition projects include the international loan exhibition, Through Vincent’s Eyes: Van Gogh and His Sources (2020) as well as a major reinstallation of the permanent collection coincident with the reopening of our newly renovated galleries. Duties include loan correspondence, updating of checklists, rights and reproduction, and general research support for accompanying exhibition catalogues. S/he would also act as the point person for authors contributing essays to exhibition catalogues. Other responsibilities include assistance with the conception and implementation of exhibition design, all didactics, and related programming, including scholarly symposia. S/he also functions as the point person for any additional venues for traveling exhibitions and works closely with registration on matters pertaining to shipping and insurance. Participation in day-to-day activities in the curatorial department may also be assigned, including assistance with data entry and permanent collection record maintenance.
MA degree in the history of art and ABD preferred. Minimum of one year museum experience preferred. Must have excellent research and organizational skills, a strong ability to multi-task, proficiency with MS Office, and excellent written communication skills are required. Knowledge of TMS software, Photoshop, and basic graphic design skills are preferred. Sociability and the ability to work well across departments also a must, as is a can-do attitude and strong work ethic.
- Schedule: Full Time - 40 hours/week.
