The Santa Barbara Museum of Art is one of the finest museums on the West coast and is celebrated for the superb quality of its permanent collection. Its mission is to integrate art into the lives of people through internationally recognized exhibitions special programs, as well as the thoughtful presentation of its permanent collection.

We are seeking a Senior Registrar to lead the department, after the imminent completion of a $50 million renovation. The successful candidate is responsible for the care and maintenance of the permanent collection, all art movement associated with permanent collection rotations and temporary exhibitions, and the maintenance of Registration records. The Senior Registrar supervises an Associate Registrar and Assistant/Associate Registrar (level TBD), who, together collaborate closely with Curatorial, Facilities, and Installation crews on the care and display of a permanent collection comprised of over 25,000 significant works of art, from antiquity to the present. The Senior Registrar should have deep experience in the processing of new acquisitions, the organization of international loan exhibitions, and the ability to multitask and delegate responsibility to staff in a prudent fashion. Knowledge of best practices in the handling, preservation, and storage of historical art is desirable, as is knowledge of best practices in the handling, preservation, and storage of contemporary art in all media. Database skills required and mastery of TMS in particular, a plus.

BA degree is required, preferably in Art History, Studio Art, or Museum Studies, and knowledge of art media and art handling/packing/shipping methods is preferred. Excellent record keeping, computer and clerical skills required. Five years’ experience in Registration in a supervisory capacity required. Must be able to lift art objects up to 50 pounds.
