Summer Camp – Drawing, Handmade Books, & Constructions: The Private Universe of James Castle

Ages 7 – 9

Draw, design three-dimensional constructions, and create handmade books from the castoff materials of everyday living—envelopes, cardboard, advertisements, and twine inspired by the unconventional art of James Castle, who was largely self-taught. Explore Castle’s rich and complex drawing style by sketching graphic patterns, small portraits, interiors, and landscapes. Reimagine images from magazines and canned goods for the pages of handmade books, and design cardboard and sewn paper constructions of farm animals and birds.
