Parallel Stories – Film Screening
An intimate and revealing autoethnographic documentary about uprootedness, motherhood, the love of film, friendship, and freedom. Filmmakers Heidi Hassan and Patricia Pérez, Cuban artists living in Spain and best friends since childhood, draw from their shared experience within the Cuban diaspora to trace a deeply personal journey. Through their parallel stories, they search for themselves and for each other while navigating life in a foreign land.
Gorgeous, deeply personal, poetic, and self-reflexive, the film draws viewers into a space of magical thinking shaped by displacement and trauma. Its evocative soundscape and arresting imagery create a landscape for personal and creative exploration, expanding magical realism beyond genre into a realm of imagination and feeling.
The film will be introduced by Dr. Cristina Venegas, Associate Professor in the Film and Media Studies Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she teaches courses in film history, criticism, and theory with an emphasis on Latin American film and media.
This screening is in conjunction with Magical Realism: Latin American Photographers in Dialogue on view through June 14, 2026.
