The Santa Barbara Museum of Art is one of the finest museums on the West coast and is celebrated for the superb quality of its permanent collection. Its mission is to integrate art into the lives of people through internationally recognized exhibitions, special programs, as well as the thoughtful presentation of its permanent collection.

The Santa Barbara Museum of Art seeks to hire a Director of Facilities, who will be responsible for the maintenance of the entire Museum and its additional properties. The position includes all aspects of the care of the physical plant, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, lighting, and security systems. This position also works with the Deputy Director/Chief Curator, Senior Registrar and Assistant Director of Facilities and Manager of Installation to insure the security and safety of all art works.

The Director of Facilities requires a Bachelor’s degree with technical training in related duties or equivalent experience preferred.  This position requires a minimum of ten years of progressive experience and responsibility in the field of facilities, five of which in effectively holding a supervisory position, directing a multi-functional staff. Project management in the field of construction required. Museum experience desirable. This position requires a full knowledge of HVAC, carpentry, general electrical, painting and plumbing, strong mechanical aptitude, and specific knowledge of track lighting systems. Familiarity with Procore Project management software, building systems monitoring software, building automation systems, Microsoft Office suite, including Excel and Word, and Microsoft Projects planning software, as well as working knowledge of AutoCad and/or Revit. Working knowledge of inventory and POS systems and experience in purchasing merchandise.

Must have excellent trouble-shooting and diagnostic skills and ability to identify and solve problems quickly. Ability to establish goals, set priorities and handle diverse responsibilities and deadlines. Mature judgment and excellent interpersonal and communication skills, verbal and in writing. Ability to lead and manage Facilities staff and to work across departments, including security, curatorial, registrar, finance, and development, as well as with board members. 

  • The position is a member of the Senior Staff and reports to the Deputy Director and Chief Curator.
  • Salary range: $80,000 to $120,000 DOE
