The Santa Barbara Museum of Art is one of the finest museums on the West coast and is celebrated for the superb quality of its permanent collection. Its mission is to integrate art into the lives of people through internationally recognized exhibitions special programs, as well as the thoughtful presentation of its permanent collection.
We are seeking an Assistant/Associate Registrar (level dependent on experience) to support the department, after the imminent completion of a $50 million renovation. The successful candidate assists with the care and maintenance of the permanent collection, all art movement associated with permanent collection rotations and temporary exhibitions, and the maintenance of Registration records. This position is supervised by the Senior Registrar and works closely with an Associate Registrar, who, together collaborate closely with Curatorial, Facilities, and Installation crews on the care and display of a permanent collection comprised of over 25,000 significant works of art, from antiquity to the present. The Assistant/Associate Registrar should have foundational knowledge in art handling, basic Registration practices (including the documentation of art movement, condition reporting, and data entry, TMS preferred). The successful candidate will be a team player, eager to expand their skill set in Registration, with a can-do mindset.
BA degree is required, preferably in Art History, Studio Art, or Museum Studies, and knowledge of art media and art handling/packing/shipping methods is preferred. Excellent record keeping, computer and clerical skills required. Two years experience in Registration in a fine arts museum required. Must be able to lift art objects up to 50 pounds.
