Senior Museum Technician (Temporary 4 - 6 months)
The Santa Barbara Museum of Art, a leading West Coast art museum, presents internationally-recognized collections and exhibitions and a broad array of cultural and educational activities.
Join us in this temporary position supporting our Facilities and Installations Department providing technical services in art handling, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and painting with regard to exhibition installations. This position assists our Director of Facilities/Head of Installations, our primary Sr. Museum Technician, and may oversee other Museum and Building technicians and contractors with exhibition installations and artwork rotations. Support to be provided in exhibition logistics, construction of exhibit features, installation of lighting, and may assist with general facility maintenance. Fills in for other Facilities and Installations crew members as needed and works with other departments and staff on daily operational matters such as art preparation and rehousing of objects.
Requires 7 – 10 years of successful museum level gallery installation experience, and 2 – 5 years in a skilled trade such as carpentry, electrical, and/or machining fields is preferred. Requires excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills, and experience in museum best practices with extensive knowledge of tools and materials. High School Diploma is required; BA or equivalent preferred. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs., have the ability to stand for long periods, reach overhead, stand on ladders, and bend or stoop to lift or work at ground level. Must have sufficient hand strength and the ability to operate a wide range of hand and power tools. Must be able to operate a full-size van, have a valid California driver license, and clean DMV record.
