This performance marks the fifth iteration of Breathing Room, an ongoing performative series exploring breath as a material, collective, and spatial practice shaped by histories of cloth, indigo, and transformation. Created as a special commission for the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, this site-responsive performance choreographed and performed by visual artist Shinique Smith, unfolding in three movements across the Museum’s staircase and arched façade, interweaving dance, breath and gesture.

Throughout the performance, sound is amplified, allowing breath to flow as a communal experience and as an ongoing archival element of the work.

Shinique Smith’s work is on view in Remixed: Entwined Histories & New Forms through August 30, 2026.

This performance has been made possible through the generosity of Starr Siegele.
